ON A FRIDAY afternoon in early January is when I’d finally had enough. I was over waiting for answers & sick of not getting any responses! So, I did what I do best; I searched Google for any recent news regarding the School, the laws that I had been following & anything else coming out of Marianna pertaining to the school. My jaw dropped at what came up….
“LOCALS TOUR THE DOZIER SCHOOL FOR BOYS PROPERTY.”
YOU MEAN TOURS of the same place that less than a month before I was told was “Too much of a liability” to allow anyone onto the property??? Well, F you DJJ!
NOT ONLY WERE the lies absolutely ridiculous BUT the gloating, flippant attitudes of the community & officials alike were nothing short of disgraceful! There were a few other short articles, all of the same tone. My absolute favorite being a local commissioners giddy as he gave soundbites boasting of grinding down the 70, 118 year old buildings to use as road filler & possibly moving in some autistic children.
TIME TO FIGHT
I WAS SO angry that I could barely stay sitting in my chair! I could see my opportunity to ever walk the South Campus slipping right through my fingers. It was one of the first times that I fully understood what I was going up against. Not knowing what else to do, I started pulling names out of the articles & locating contact info for each. I then launched the MOTHER of ALL email campaigns! I emailed Senators, officials, basically ANYONE I thought could help. I then changed tones & sent emails to some of the people mentioned in the articles & pleaded for someone to grant me access to the South Campus. I then moved on, hoping to get an answer BUT definitely NOT holding my breath.
GETTING SOME GUIDANCE FROM…KENNY ROGERS??
I WAS SHOCKED when I checked my email a few hours later & saw one lone reply:
I GOT IN! Holy Shit! After 4 years, I was going to be given a tour of the South Campus! I was almost scared to believe it! Of course, this was fantastic news! But here’s the catch…I would have to press pause on some of my other efforts until I actually stepped foot onto that property. I couldn’t do anything that could jeopardize getting inside of that fence! This would have to include skipping the February Marianna Commission Meeting that I had been scheduled to attend, which totally sucked! I wanted to go full throttle from ALL angles at the same time BUT the reality was once you put it out there, you can’t take it back. Once I made myself known as an actual pain in the ass, named individual, it would be done. Gone would be the days that I could walk quietly in & out of town. For some reason a familiar tune ran through my head, offering me some advice to maintain the patience that I usually lack…
FROM AS FAR back as I can remember, my grandfather used to always sing this old country song to us grandkids. We’d giggle & dance around, too young to even understand what the words meant. Now, they make perfect sense…
